Information We Collect
Information You Provide
- Account Information: When you use YoTu, we create a unique anonymous identifier for your account. We do not require personal information like your name or email address to use the app.
- Video URLs: When you request a summary, we process the video URL you provide.
- Channel Subscriptions: If you subscribe to channels within the app, we store these preferences to provide auto-summarization features.
- Ask AI Questions: If you use the Ask AI feature, we process the question text you type about a summarized video.
Automatically Collected Information
- Device Information: We may collect device type, operating system version, and unique device identifiers for analytics and support purposes.
- Usage Data: We collect information about how you use the app, including summaries generated, features used, and time saved metrics.
- Push Notification Tokens: If you enable notifications, we collect your device token to send you alerts about new summaries.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve our services
- Generate AI-powered video summaries
- Answer questions you ask about summarized videos (Ask AI)
- Send push notifications for auto-summarized content
- Track your usage metrics and time saved
- Process subscription payments through Apple
- Respond to your support requests
- Analyze usage patterns to improve the app
AI-Powered Summarization
YoTu uses third-party AI services provided by Google Cloud to generate video summaries. When you request a summary, the following data is sent for processing:
- Video transcript text: The captions/transcript of the video you are summarizing
- Video title: The title of the video
- Video URL: The URL of the video
No personal information (such as your name, email, account identifier, or device information) is included in requests sent to the AI service.
Data is processed in accordance with Google Cloud's Privacy Notice. Data sent to the AI service is used only to generate your summary or answer and is not retained by the AI service after processing. We do retain a condensed copy of video transcripts on our own servers to power app features (see Data Retention below).
Before your first summary, the app will ask for your explicit consent to share video data with the AI service. You can review this consent at any time in the app's Settings.
Ask AI (Video Chat)
YoTu lets you ask questions about a video you have summarized ("Ask AI"). When you ask a question, the following data is sent to the same third-party AI service to generate the answer:
- Your question: The question text you type (and, for follow-up questions, your immediately preceding question and answer, to preserve conversation context)
- Video transcript text: A condensed transcript of the video
- Video title: The title of the video
No personal information (such as your name, account identifier, or device information) is included in these requests.
To answer repeated questions faster, questions and their AI-generated answers may be cached on our servers. Cache entries contain only the video, the question text, and the answer; they are not linked to your account. We also count the number of questions you ask (per video and per day), linked to your anonymous identifier, to enforce plan limits. Your chat history is stored on your device.
AI Text-to-Speech
If you use the "Listen" feature, your summary text is sent to a third-party text-to-speech service to generate audio narration. No personal information is included in these requests.
Third-Party Services
YoTu currently uses the following third-party services:
- Google Cloud (currently): For AI-powered video summarization, text-to-speech narration, video data retrieval, authentication, database storage, cloud functions, and push notifications
- Apple: For subscription management and payments
These services have their own privacy policies governing their use of your data. Google Cloud's privacy practices are described in Google Cloud's Privacy Notice.
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored securely using Firebase's cloud infrastructure. We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.
Data Retention
- Summary History: Your summaries are retained as long as you have an active account. Free users can access 7 days of history; paid users have unlimited history access.
- Ask AI Questions and Answers: Questions and AI-generated answers may be cached on our servers so repeated questions can be answered faster. Cache entries are keyed by video and question text and are not linked to your account.
- Video Transcripts: A condensed transcript of each summarized video is retained on our servers to power summaries and Ask AI without repeatedly re-fetching the video's captions.
- Account Data: Your account data is retained until you request deletion.
- Usage Analytics: Aggregated, anonymized analytics may be retained indefinitely.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: Request a copy of your data
- Deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated data
- Correction: Request correction of inaccurate data
- Opt-out: Disable push notifications at any time through your device settings
To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@yotu.app.

YoTu is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
